Lead Vegetable Farmer

Location: 3186 Carp Road

What's the opportunity?

Opa’s Farming Huis is a new venture that brings together experienced local farmers who share a passion for regenerative agriculture. Working from two locations in Ottawa West, our mission is to offer the highest quality food: organically-grown vegetables; and all-natural beef, pork and chicken products.

We are looking for an experienced Farmer or Vegetable Gardener to oversee our vegetable program. This is a permanent full-time position. There is the option to start now and finish out the 2024 season (we are offering a small subscription program for company employees), or to join the team for the start of the 2025 season. For 2025 and beyond, our intention is to offer a full home-delivery Vegetable CSA Box program and Farm Stand sales.

Most of the work will take place at our Carp Rd. location (operated in partnership with KOTT Inc.), however you may be asked occasionally to work at Opa’s Dunrobin location.

Working under the direction of our Site Manager and in close collaboration with the Farm Manager, you will lead all aspects of our vegetable program from planning, to growing, to garden maintenance, to packaging for vegetable box deliveries and the Farm Stand.

You are hands-on in the fields and will oversee a small team of gardener/laborers who help you. This is labour-intensive, physical work and you will work outside 90% of the time (rain or shine!)

Your regular schedule is Monday to Thursday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, and Fridays from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. The wage range for this position is $24.00-$28.00/hour depending on experience.

Your day-to-day responsibilities:

  • – Planning and executing the seeding, transplanting, harvesting and re-seeding schedule
  • – Planning and executing regular vegetable garden maintenance – weeding, watering
  • – Harvesting and preparing vegetables for veggie box deliveries and/or sale at the Farm Stand
  • – Ensuring general groundskeeping and lawn maintenance is performed regularly
  • – Ensuring tools/equipment are in good repair, and reporting any deficiencies to the Site Manager
  • – Preparing the fields for winter
  • – Garden bed planning for future growing seasons
  • – Keeping the vegetable program budget up to date
  • – Other related duties at either location, as required by the Site Manager

What you need to succeed:

  • – Previous experience with growing vegetables is mandatory
  • – Familiarity with regenerative farming methods – or a willingness to learn about them
  • – Proven skills in planning and scheduling
  • – Previous experience using MS Excel
  • – Capable of heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and able to stand for long periods
  • – Quality and detail oriented
  • – Ability to work well as part of a team
  • – Ability to communicate well in English
